The End. Epilogue…
Seriously!?!
As Mr and Mrs Edward sat on the bland beige couch of the therapist, the look of dismay was tearing Mrs Edward apart. She was being judge and evaluated as a horrible person.
This was beyond unfair.
She would have much preferred he took her to the basement and unleashed his anger on her. But instead, Mr Edward had put away all the kinky toys and secured them outside the house at an undisclosed place. They would not return until a satisfactory conclusion was reached at the end of the therapy sessions.
The discussions around the motivations behind the second beating had been very intense and very difficult. No progress had been made to uncover what had happened around the first beating.
Best extrapolation was that the same motives around the second played a big roll around the first.
Their relationship was otherwise normal. Their bond, otherwise, good. But. That concept that only a marriage by a certain age was deemed as success proved to be extra difficult to break.
Mr Edward was very surprised to find out that the very things that his wife had tried to correct out of her son were the very things she craved from him. She longed for his hand of control to step up and secure her in moments when she felt unsure and out of control.
Because she appeared so strong all the time, Mr Edward did not realize his wife needed him during the moments of vulnerability she experienced. He had totally missed the signs because she hid them so well under a strong-willed hand of control.
The reason why the pink car was such an issue was not the color but the fact it reminded her of how her mom had struggled with a similar one in the snow and her dad had laughed at her mother’s vulnerability. She had seen her mom, who was otherwise a fearless winner, crumple and cry in desperation as she tried to get free in the snow and failed.
The only time her mother ever appeared weak and cried was behind the wheel of a car that was too much car for her to handle. Mrs Edward had vowed to never ever be that weak or that exposed. Nor allow any progeny of hers to ever prey on a woman’s vulnerability like that.
While it was clear that the opinion of others mattered, the concept of being without reproach had taken too far a turn towards obsession. They both liked to keep their reputation intact but what constituted intact had to be adjusted by both parties.
Mrs Edward had a very hard time accepting the notion that her influence on Andrew was over. The young man was approaching his thirties. He was not late. He was on time given his achievements. The pressure that they were putting would only result in his efforts to hide all of his life from them.
All they could hope for was that Andrew was not permanently scarred by their over zealous parenting efforts. The fact the other children came out OK meant well for their hopes for Andrew. If Andrew’s sudden distance was any indicator, it probably meant that he had done some soul searching and had decided to take matters of his own life into his full control. They had to respect that.
The tone of judgment was unsettling to Mrs Edward. How could her husband be nodding his head and staying so calm. What did he know that she didn’t?
“Look.. I get what you’re saying, but as his mother, I have to make things right.. So you stop judging me”
The room grew very cold and quiet.
“No one is judging you” hubby and the therapist said together.
It would be another several sessions before Mrs Edward stopped feeling judged. A few more sessions after that, she finally confessed to her feelings about having gotten stuck with the pink car. The outpouring of raw emotions stunned everyone. None more than Mrs Edward as she felt the approving arms of her husband doing his best to console her while encouraging her to process her feelings.
She had resisted his help. She had tried to punish his efforts. She worked through them and it became clear that she had hated herself for feeling weak in that moment and weak in sexual desires from being helpless. She had wanted her man to save her and had felt abandoned that he was out of town.
She had wanted to get rid of the car and it had punished her and totally shattered her confidence. Her shallow victory of seeing a totally new car get crushed at the junk yard had not eased her sense of shame she had felt.
When Mr Edward informed his wife that Andrew had suspected her feelings about the car, she totally melted in grief. Her son had known of her fears of that car. He had told his dad that he wanted to keep the car so that one day she could safely face her fears with the help of his dad.
This revelation totally shredded her soul. She had violated the peace of her son because of her own internal demons. She had ruined her son because she had not gained self mastery. She had not listened to her husband. She had not taken his insights into consideration.
As the sessions wrapped up, the question still hung in the air. Was Andrew OK? Did he need therapy? Would he be willing to consider therapy if they brought that up to his attention?
The therapist had been clear, leave Andrew alone.
Hubby had been very clear, if she dared approach and intervened again, he was walking out of her life.
What was a caring mother to do?
Only time would tell. Only time would tell who was right. Mr Edward, Mrs Edward, or the therapist.
Against her better judgment, but in keeping with her heart… Mrs Edward made a deal with her hubby.
“If Andrew is happy and does get married and doesn’t hate me, I will drive a pink Caddie for you and call you daddy”
Mr Edward smiled. He didn’t have proof. But something told him that he would be collecting on this promise sooner than later.
