Rushing out, she blindly slammed into Andrew. The unexpected firm physique surprised Kate. Gasping, she mumbled an apology and tried to rush out. Andrew’s arm caught her and steadied her. With awe, Kate looked up into Andrew’s eyes. There was this deep sense of care radiating from him as he asked her if she was OK.
Nodding absentmindedly, Kate was failing to steady herself. Andrew was looking at her with deep passionate care. The kind the woman in the dream was getting from the man she was with.
“I… um… gotta go” Kate pleaded, annoyed that her voice betrayed her so.
“Kate. You sure you’re OK?” Andrew asked softly.
Nodding her head and pushing back, Kate freed herself from Andrew. She was feeling way too vulnerable at this moment in time. She had to vanish and do so quickly.
Later that day. Kate was sitting at a picnic table enjoying her lunch. Her mind had forgotten about the dream. Things were back to normal. The rest of the day was booked solid with lots of field work. Andrew was tucked away at work doing computer stuff. Life was feeling normal again.
“Hi Kate”
A familiar voice had broken into the peaceful moment Kate was enjoying.
“You got a second to talk?” Christie asked.
“Uh… OK… what’s up?” Kate asked a little perplexed.
“I wanted to talk to you about Andrew” Christie said as she sat herself down next to Kate.
With a hard swallow, Kate cleared her throat and nodded.
“Funny you swallowed like that” Christie said as her face flushed over bright red.
“What’s so funny about that” Kate cautiously ventured.
“Um… long story…” Christie’s voice trailed as her hands wrung themselves very nervously.
Kate didn’t know what to think. The dream’s details were starting to resurface and was making Kate feel uncomfortable.
With a growing knot in her stomach, Kate listened to Christie recount a date she had. A date that ran nearly identical to the one in Kate’s dreams. Difference, the man was not Andrew. The man had wanted to know if Kate would be willing to join in some fun. Kate watched in silent hidden horror as Christie’s face grew ever more read as she presented the indecent proposal.
“You’re absolutely kidding me, right?” Kate hoped to have asked firmly enough.
“If you could convince Andrew to come with you, that would be so cool…” Christie wondered out loud.
Panic gripped Kate.
Her phone rang. Looking down, the screen seemed to flicker a bit with Andrew’s name on it. It rang again.
As Kate picked up the phone, her head spun. This was just too crazy a moment. The world went to hell overnight.
“Hello…” Kate timidly said as she answered Andrew’s call.
“Did you oversleep? Everyone is looking for you?” Andrew asked with a gentle worried voice.
“Um… what?!?” Kate felt a weird sense of loss. Something was not feeling right.
Batting her eyes a few times to wish away the craziness of what Christie had proposed, Kate found herself very disoriented in her bed drenched in sweat.
“Andrew… um…” Kate froze. She was looking around to gain her bearings. “What time is it?”
“It’s eleven and you didn’t call out sick” Andrew replied.
“Oh. My. Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Kate screamed.
“You overslept, didn’t you” Andrew said reassuringly.
“I’m so sorry… I don’t know what happened” Kate replied.
“Don’t worry, I’m covering for you.” Andrew replied.
“Why?!?” Kate shot back as her back drew instantly erect.
Andrew laughed. “That’s not the thanks I was expecting”
Kate paused. Her nerves were shot. This dream had been all too real. All too intense.
“You won’t believe the dream I had” Kate replied
“Yeah, you wouldn’t believe mine either” Andrew said with a very cool voice… hinting at sadness.
“How bad was your dream?” Kate asked without thinking
“I lost my job… kind of dream” Andrew answered flatly.
“I’m sorry” Kate didn’t know what to say next. “I will hurry up and get in”
“Be safe. I can’t cover you if you don’t make it in” Andrew playfully retorted.
As Kate examined the evidence, it was clear to her she had never left the bed from the night before. She had two dreams in one. This was beyond wild and crazy. What was her subconscious trying to tell her?
After rushing to get dressed, Kate checked her phone one last time before driving out. There was a text message from Christie. She wanted to know if it would look OK if she wore sparkling shimmery opaque tights with chrome heels to the banquet.
Kate paused. That was the same set of nylon the man had used to secure his date to the bed. Very shimmery sparkling tights. Kate didn’t want to reply in part because she was shaking with adrenaline, but also, because she was running way too late and didn’t want Christie to start a text chat while she drove in to the office.
Later that day, a meeting was called into session. Christie wanted an update on one of the many projects they had. Kate took notice of the leather belt Christie was wearing. Same stitching as the dress she had seen in the dream. The chrome heels were on. Christie stood marvelously in them. The fellas around the table were smitten… well… some of them anyway… as Christie moved with grace and purpose.
Kate saw the electricity Christie was trying to hold from crossing over to Andrew. To Kate’s delight, Andrew was oblivious to the heat.
At the end of the meeting, Christie tried to clear the conference room fast. Kate didn’t want to linger much either. The guys by the printer had been a paying her too much attention as it was. Andrew seemed lost in thoughts as his pen worked his paper over. Christie was lingering behind as well.
Something felt different. As Kate doubled back to the conference room, she heard part of the conversation that Christie was having with Andrew. There was electricity after all. But a very different kind. One she had no experience with. Her heart normally would have been instantly hurt by what she heard. However, with the context of the dream, she just smiled.
Andrew was not the kind of man who would play around with women’s feelings. He was direct in his pursuit, or so Kate told herself. The information she overheard helped her realize that Christie stood no chance with Andrew. Andrew was in total control of this electric field that seemed to find him.
Before anyone suspected that Kate was lingering about, she moved away and back to her desk. Her feelings for Andrew had gone from mildly curious to wanting. The dream had changed everything. Kate couldn’t explain it at all. However, it felt right. Just as long as Andrew was not the type that needed to hit a woman, all would be just fine.
Meanwhile
Christie hoped that Kate had not circle back. If Kate suspected anything, it would ruin Andrew’s chances with her. Their talk was needed. Christie loved her connection to Andrew, as professional as it was. There was no need to rock the boat and complicate anything.
As Christie looked out the window and saw Andrew make his way to his car, she couldn’t help but feel the weight he was carrying on his shoulders. The only time he had appeared to be free of such a burden was when he had made himself vulnerable in front of her with his gesture of kindness.
If there was ever a way to help him unload his burden and feel that freedom again, Christie was willing. Something about silver heels held the key to lifting the weight Andrew carried. But, finding the right moment was next to impossible. Andrew was extremely well guarded. Kate had her work cut out for her.
