About

Growing up, reading romance and talking about sex was just as taboo as any other family I knew. Everything had to be about learning. Everything had to be linked to a benefit in life. That totally made sense when times were a bit tight. Productivity was the huge focus.

While an avid reader of many genre, romance was that forbidden part of the library this nerd hesitated to touch. Worse, as a guy, you’d be laughed at and humiliated if you touched a girlie book (as it was known then). One day, while speaking to several ladies, the topic of romance came up.

It was disheartening to realize none of the guys knew much about romance other than how to get a woman’s pager number and scoring. The women preferred a ton of interactions I knew nothing about. So, I braved the unknown and read few romance novels. There was a rich world of context and content missing in my knowledge base.

Today. Several well meaning people have said that writing romance is pure waste of time and will make you quick non-respectful cash. Never knew that cash had a moral value associated with it. The experiment was never to sell anything. The experiment was to see if I could write a compelling story that readers would enjoy.

There is no point in blogging if no one wants to read your work. My first experiments bored me as a writer. One can only imagine what the reader felt. On the tip of a friend, this site came about. Write about something you can visualize and enjoy. Something that excites. Something a bit daring. Taboo even.

To me, the biggest taboo of all writing is erotic overtures in romance. Nothing strikes more fear in me than writing something in an exotic tone. What better topic to explore and force myself to create compelling reading. This stuff terrifies me. This stuff weakens my knees and heightens my blood pressure. This thing makes me blush in humbling shades of crimson.

The ideas flow. The concepts build. The drive is at an all time high. I’m riding this wave totally freaked out. Mr Ultra Private Conservative is writing liberal racy sexy things. Totally white knuckling this.

The goal: as all geeks know… there is a hypothesis, a theory, an objective. Improve my ability to tell a story. That is it. The goal is just to learn how to tell a compelling story. Eventually, I will no longer be scared to tell any story. Eventually I will write about anything. For now, just get to get past this taboo and just write fully and fluently.

This site will start with the scariest of topics and may evolve considerably from there. Who knows what will be tomorrow. For now, the Shallows of Deep is all about tipping and wading into the fear and conquering it. One is more creative when one is not afraid. Or so I’m told. Working on getting comfortable with this new skill called writing.

Enjoy the journey. Feel free to share your thoughts at the end of any posts. Most of my fans currently are from social media. I’d love to get to know more about my readers through their comments.

Cheers to new possibilities when living fearlessly.
