Throughout the ages, the various five senses have fascinated people. When it comes to story telling, knowing how to touch the five senses makes a huge deal in conveying your thoughts very well.
In the case of the story “Click of Marble” the idea stems back from deep in my childhood. I’ve written about aspects of it before but never gone out of my way to make fiction around it. Being that the notion has nearly been forgotten, it was refreshingly exciting to bring back something I used to enjoy passionately.
I used to try to identify people by how they sounded when they walked to me. Not because I was not sighted or anything but because I had read the Helen Keller story as a young child. I was not old enough to fully grasp all the ins and outs of it, but I devoured the story fully.
Ever since then, I’ve been curious about sounds. With time, the attention to how people walked shifted over to how music came together. I’ve always worried that with time my hearing would decrease… especially with a lot of educational content being consumed via headphones (which I try to keep at a low volume most of the time)
Some time after the reading the book, “The Power Suit Super Mom” event happened. The sound of her clicking heel on marble has never been lost on me. While the memory has faded plenty, what has not is the various emotional associations with that sound once testosterone of adolescence was introduced to my existence.
Many decades later, thinking about how much school has influenced the way I set goals, it was a challenge to find a story that included school (for back to school theme) and something sexy and racy for the blog. I didn’t want to talk about any crush a young person would have for a teacher. Definitely didn’t want to add to the sexualization of teachers that is getting more and more out of control.
So, what to do. Thankfully, my other blog (www.lovesperspective.com) created the right spark of ideas. Taking part of the story that was worked on for this week over there, decided to expand in a very experimental way over here. From the feedback I have gotten so far, people liked the creativity.
There were a few other influential factors behind this story. I’ve been trying to figure a phenomenon and a few of my fans provided me a ton of provocative thoughts. No other place than this blog would be suitable for that kind of spiciness. So, why not make this story the prelude to some of those spicy ideas. Not all of which will be published obviously… gotta keep the innocent safe too. Lol
As was seen on the blog, the question about unsung heroes came into play. Those who toil to make life as we know work just fine. There are so many people who keep a school system operational that we don’t often talk about or glamorize. There is a good reason why summer traffic is so light compared to school day traffic. There are so many people working in eduction that aren’t student facing… ie not teachers. And since the story was to appear on the American Labor Day weekend, why not talk about the unsung heroes of the education field.
Now you’ve got a bit of insight into the madness that gave rise to the blog post “A Click of Marble”. I’m keeping the rest of the madness carefully packed away so that other stories can come to light and keep you delighted.
