The Cut

The Cut

It was silly, really, a slight of words
No big deal. Just a quick dismissal

The little word game some play
But to others, slices through the heart
As if a hot knife through soft butter

She wanted to be cute
Show her friends she was her own boss
Little did she understand this to be true
Words do cut like floss

With a jubilant smile
He masked his hurt
It’s not like she was asking for a mile

The frame had been broken
The heart was now bleeding
Behind the armor, he was slipping

It really was silly, for they were just words
Not a big deal at all, a misunderstanding is was

She noted his muted mood
Puzzled, she jabbed a joke or two
His lips smiled, but his eyes remained hollow

Must be an ego thing, she dismissed
There was no point to slip into a fight
It’s not like she had intended to make a slight
He’d have to man up and not skip a beat, she hissed

It’s really too silly, you see
There are words that are just a slight of play
What she failed to understand, the cut was deep
He couldn’t ignore this

She had cut deep
It was only a matter of time, you see
Before his pride would demand retribution

Because, as silly as it was
The cut would need to heal

The Vault

The best way to illustrate what’s going on is to use the reference of games. One party is playing a good game of checkers while the other is mastering the 3D version of chess.

What started as a little jab in a playful matter got mis-translated. There was a signal malfunction. This is not an abnormal event.

There are no gender differences in the miscommunication that takes place. No one sets out to send the wrong in formation.

However, when certain assumptions are made, people get hurt needlessly. Fellas can’t go around assuming they’re entitled to the trust and romance a woman is capable of offering. Ladies can’t go around concluding the men are insensitive jerks on a mission to cause hurt.

The list of assumptions and stereotypes are long. They are the source of many misunderstandings.

With her slight of words, as innocent as they were, he found himself falling into a darkened state, locked in an emotional vault.

Had he acted on impulse, a fight would have been launched, and both would have been hurt. Trying to go for the emotional higher ground, he stood in silence… unaware that this counted as an offense to her. So the two sit looking at each other in longing while trying to understand the pain they’re suddenly feeling.

Hence… the darkening…

  1. In matters of the heart words cut deeper than any weapon weilded could wound. What most don’t realize is when words cut trust and respect are as well. When carelessly left to fester those wounds are too deep to heal and the relationship is doomed.

    1. Total truth. Very well said. 100% agree

I wrote this series to tease out that fact. I could have done it in less words but I was having too much fun
